Bring Back Nap Time
From taking a break yourself to creating an ~official~ school nap policy.
Start small. If you're tired, ask a teacher to take a nap in their classroom during lunch.
Normalize. Make it socially acceptable to ask a teacher that, and make sleep part of your brand.
- Respond to βUggghhh I got four hours of sleepβ with, βHomie, I just slept for DAYS in Mrs. Frizzleβs room.β
- Split a MASSIVE fluffy $20 blanket with your friends, then share it. Invite other tired-looking people to use it.
- Remember begging your mom for a dog? Channel that, bestie. Beg all your teachers to buy blankets for their classroom.
- Gas people up for sleeping during lunch
- Find spaces in the school that are comfy and usually empty (drama classroom, library). Start a sleep club that meets during lunch in these spaces and get a teacher supervisor.
Negotiate. Commit to helping other students sleep better at home if the school approves the use of advisory time as nap time. Win-win. Email your principal about it! Or ask for this anonymously here.
Hereβs two strategies you can give your friends:
1. If you have insomnia (canβt fall asleep / anxious about sleep) and canβt/wonβt seek medical care, download the CBT-i Coach app. CBT-i is a proven strategy for treating insomnia, and it even works online without a doctor.
Youβre getting more sleep than you think and losing one nightβs sleep isnβt that badβyou donβt have to be anxious. Find something calming and when you have intrusive anxious thoughts, ask yourself: whatβs the worst that can happen?
2. If youβre using your phone a lot before bed, donβt try to cut it out all at once: try to use slightly less addictive apps instead, getting you to bed a little earlier because, well, you get bored, then move down the ladder every week, eliminating one app at a time.
